The André Kostelanetz Orchestra was a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1931 by Russian-American conductor and arranger André Kostelanetz. The orchestra was known for its unique blend of classical and popular music, and its innovative arrangements that combined the two genres. André Kostelanetz was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia in 1901. He began his musical career as a pianist, but later turned to conducting and arranging. In 1922, he immigrated to the United States and began working as a conductor and arranger for various radio stations and orchestras. In 1931, Kostelanetz formed his own orchestra, which he called the André Kostelanetz Orchestra. The ensemble was made up of some of the finest musicians in the country, and quickly gained a reputation for its innovative arrangements and unique sound. One of the highlights of the André Kostelanetz Orchestra's early career was its performance at the 1939 New York World's Fair. The orchestra played a series of concerts at the fair, which were broadcast live on the radio and heard by millions of people around the world. The concerts were a huge success, and helped to establish the orchestra as one of the premier classical music ensembles in the country. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, the André Kostelanetz Orchestra continued to perform and record, releasing a series of popular albums that blended classical and popular music. Some of the orchestra's most famous recordings include "Carnival of the Animals," "Pictures at an Exhibition," and "Porgy and Bess." In addition to its recordings, the André Kostelanetz Orchestra also performed live concerts around the world. One of the highlights of the orchestra's touring career was its performance at the 1956 Edinburgh International Festival. The orchestra played a series of concerts at the festival, which were attended by thousands of people and received rave reviews from critics. Over the years, the André Kostelanetz Orchestra won numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 1959, the orchestra won a Grammy Award for its recording of "Porgy and Bess," and in 1961, it won another Grammy for its recording of "Carnival of the Animals." Despite its success, the André Kostelanetz Orchestra began to decline in popularity in the 1960s and 1970s. The rise of rock and roll and other popular music genres made it more difficult for classical music ensembles to attract audiences, and the orchestra struggled to stay relevant. In 1980, André Kostelanetz retired from conducting, and the André Kostelanetz Orchestra disbanded. However, the orchestra's legacy lives on, and its innovative arrangements and unique sound continue to influence classical and popular music to this day.
