The RTE Concert Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Dublin, Ireland. It was founded in 1948 as the Radio Eireann Light Orchestra, and was later renamed the RTE Light Orchestra. In 1960, it was restructured as the RTE Concert Orchestra, with a focus on performing classical music. The orchestra is made up of around 45 musicians, and is led by conductor John Wilson. The members of the orchestra are highly skilled musicians, many of whom have studied at prestigious music schools and conservatories around the world. Over the years, the RTE Concert Orchestra has performed at many major events and venues, both in Ireland and abroad. Some of the highlights of the orchestra's performances include a concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2011, as part of the BBC Proms series. The orchestra has also performed at the Edinburgh International Festival, the Kilkenny Arts Festival, and the Cork International Choral Festival. In addition to its live performances, the RTE Concert Orchestra has also recorded numerous albums and soundtracks. Some of the most notable recordings include the soundtrack for the film "Angela's Ashes," which was composed by John Williams, and the soundtrack for the television series "The Tudors," which was composed by Trevor Morris. The RTE Concert Orchestra has received many awards and accolades over the years. In 2018, the orchestra was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Irish Film and Television Awards, in recognition of its contribution to the film and television industry in Ireland. The orchestra has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards, for its recordings of classical music and film soundtracks.
