He was the son of a successful businessman and a talented pianist, and he showed an early interest in music. His first major success came in 1929 with the musical comedy "Mr. Cinders," which featured the hit song "Spread a Little Happiness." The song became a popular standard and was later recorded by many artists, including Bing Crosby and Sting. In the 1930s, Ellis continued to write music for musical comedies, including "The Fleet's Lit Up" and "Jill Darling." He also wrote the music for the film "Evergreen" in 1934, which featured the song "Waltz of My Heart." During World War II, Ellis served in the Royal Air Force and wrote music for the RAF's entertainment unit.
