The New London Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1988 by conductor Ronald Corp. The orchestra is based in London, England and is known for its innovative programming and commitment to promoting lesser-known works. Ronald Corp, who is also a composer and pianist, founded the New London Orchestra with the aim of creating a flexible ensemble that could perform a wide range of repertoire. The orchestra's first concert was held in 1988 at St. John's Smith Square in London, and featured works by Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. Over the years, the New London Orchestra has become known for its performances of lesser-known works by composers such as George Butterworth, Frank Bridge, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. The orchestra has also commissioned and premiered new works by contemporary composers, including Cecilia McDowall and David Matthews. The New London Orchestra has a core group of musicians, but also works with a pool of freelance musicians to create a flexible ensemble that can adapt to different repertoire and performance spaces. The orchestra has collaborated with a wide range of artists, including singers, dancers, and actors. One of the highlights of the New London Orchestra's career was its performance of George Butterworth's A Shropshire Lad at the BBC Proms in 1994. The performance was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and received critical acclaim. The orchestra has also performed at other major venues in London, including the Royal Festival Hall and the Barbican Centre. In addition to its performances, the New London Orchestra has also released several recordings. Its recording of Frank Bridge's The Sea was nominated for a Gramophone Award in 1995, and its recording of George Butterworth's orchestral works was named a Gramophone Editor's Choice in 2013. The New London Orchestra has received several awards and accolades over the years. In 2002, the orchestra was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Ensemble Award for its "outstanding contribution to classical music." The orchestra has also been praised for its educational work, which includes workshops and concerts for young people. Today, the New London Orchestra continues to be a leading ensemble in the UK classical music scene. Under the leadership of Ronald Corp, the orchestra remains committed to promoting lesser-known works and creating innovative programming that engages audiences of all ages.
