He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Baynes showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at a young age. He later studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he excelled in composition and conducting. Baynes began his career as a conductor, leading orchestras in London and throughout Europe. He was known for his dynamic and expressive conducting style, which brought out the best in his musicians. Baynes was also a prolific composer, writing music for a variety of genres, including orchestral works, operas, and popular songs. One of Baynes' most famous works is his march, "The Longest Day," which was written in 1916 during World War I. The piece was inspired by the bravery of the soldiers who fought in the war and became a popular anthem for the British military. "The Longest Day" is still played today at military ceremonies and parades. Baynes also wrote several operas, including "The Maid of the Mountains," which premiered in 1917. The opera was a huge success and ran for over 1,300 performances in London's West End. "The Maid of the Mountains" was later adapted into a film and became one of the most popular operettas of the early 20th century. In addition to his classical works, Baynes also wrote popular songs, including "If You Were the Only Girl in the World," which was a hit in both the United States and the United Kingdom. The song was later featured in several films and became a standard in the popular music repertoire. Baynes continued to compose and conduct throughout his life, and his music remains popular today. He died on December 10, 1938, in London, England, at the age of 59. Despite his relatively short life, Baynes left a lasting legacy in the world of classical music and popular culture.More....
