Mitchell Leigh was an American composer and songwriter, best known for his work in the field of musical theater. Born on January 22, 1928, in Brooklyn, New York, Leigh grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Leigh showed a keen interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of six. Leigh attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City, where he studied composition and orchestration. After graduating, he went on to study at the Juilliard School of Music, where he received a degree in composition. During his time at Juilliard, Leigh studied under some of the most prominent composers of the time, including Vincent Persichetti and William Schuman. After completing his studies, Leigh began working as a composer and arranger for various television shows and commercials. He also worked as a conductor and arranger for several Broadway productions, including "The Sound of Music" and "My Fair Lady." In 1965, Leigh achieved his greatest success with the musical "Man of La Mancha." The show, which was based on the novel "Don Quixote" by Miguel de Cervantes, featured music by Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion. The show's signature song, "The Impossible Dream," became an instant classic and has since been covered by countless artists. "Man of La Mancha" went on to win five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and was later adapted into a film starring Peter O'Toole and Sophia Loren. The show has been revived numerous times over the years and remains a beloved classic of the musical theater canon. Leigh went on to compose music for several other Broadway productions, including "Cry for Us All" and "Home Sweet Homer." He also wrote the score for the film "The Happy Ending," which starred Jean Simmons and John Forsythe. In addition to his work in musical theater and film, Leigh also composed music for the concert hall. His works include a symphony, a piano concerto, and several chamber pieces. Throughout his career, Leigh was known for his melodic and lyrical style, as well as his ability to write music that was both emotionally powerful and intellectually stimulating. His music has been praised for its beauty, its complexity, and its ability to capture the essence of the human experience. Leigh passed away on March 16, 2014, at the age of 86. His legacy as one of the great composers of the 20th century lives on through his timeless music, which continues to inspire and move audiences around the world.
