Born on October 31, 1957, in Seattle, Washington, Mitchell grew up in a family of musicians and performers, and was exposed to classical music and theater from a young age. Mitchell's parents were both musicians, and his father was a member of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. As a child, Mitchell was encouraged to pursue music and began taking piano lessons at the age of six.
