John Morris Russell is a renowned conductor and music director who has made a significant impact on the classical music scene. Born on August 18, 1960, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Russell grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a singer, so music was always a part of his life. Russell started playing the piano at the age of five and later learned to play the trumpet. Russell attended the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree in conducting from the University of Southern California. During his time at USC, Russell studied under the renowned conductor Daniel Lewis. After completing his studies, Russell began his career as a conductor. He served as the assistant conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra from 1988 to 1992. He then went on to become the associate conductor of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra from 1992 to 1998. During his time in Baltimore, Russell conducted numerous concerts and made several recordings with the orchestra. In 1998, Russell was appointed as the music director of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra in Ontario, Canada. He held this position for six years and helped to elevate the orchestra's profile in the community. Russell also served as the music director of the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra in South Carolina from 2002 to 2013. In 2010, Russell was appointed as the conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, a position he still holds today. Under his leadership, the orchestra has continued to thrive and has become one of the most popular orchestras in the country. Russell has conducted numerous concerts with the Cincinnati Pops, including performances with renowned artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Renée Fleming, and Audra McDonald. In 2008, he was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He has written several pieces for orchestra, including "Fanfare for the Uncommon Man" and "The Great American Songbook."
