Richard M. Sherman was born on June 12, 1928, in New York City. He was the son of Rosa and Al Sherman, who were both successful songwriters in the 1920s and 1930s. Richard grew up in a musical household and began playing the piano at a young age. He and his brother Robert began writing songs together in their teenage years. In 1951, Richard and Robert moved to California to pursue careers in music. They began working for Walt Disney Studios in 1960, where they wrote some of the most iconic songs in Disney history. Their first major success was the song "Tall Paul," which was recorded by Annette Funicello and became a hit in 1959. The Sherman brothers went on to write the music for many classic Disney films, including "Mary Poppins," "The Jungle Book," "The Aristocats," and "Bedknobs and Broomsticks." They won two Academy Awards for their work on "Mary Poppins," including Best Original Song for "Chim Chim Cher-ee" and Best Original Score. In addition to their work for Disney, the Sherman brothers wrote songs for other films and television shows, including "Charlotte's Web," "The Slipper and the Rose," and "The Tigger Movie." They also wrote the theme song for the television series "Zorro." Richard Sherman continued to work in the music industry after his brother's death in 2012. He wrote the music for the stage musical "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and collaborated with his son, Gregory, on the stage musical "A Spoonful of Sherman," which celebrates the music of the Sherman brothers. Throughout his career, Richard Sherman has been recognized for his contributions to the music industry. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 and received a Disney Legends Award in 1990. He continues to be a beloved figure in the world of music and entertainment.
