Erich Kunzel was a renowned American conductor and musician who specialized in classical music. He was born on March 21, 1935, in New York City, and grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut. Kunzel's parents were both musicians, and he began playing the piano at a young age. He later studied at Dartmouth College and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Kunzel's career as a conductor began in the 1960s when he was appointed as the assistant conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He quickly gained a reputation for his dynamic and engaging performances, and in 1977, he was appointed as the music director of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. Under his leadership, the orchestra became one of the most popular and successful pops orchestras in the world. Kunzel's performances were known for their energy and excitement, and he was particularly skilled at bringing classical music to a wider audience. He was a regular guest conductor with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops, and the National Symphony Orchestra. He also conducted many performances for major events, such as the Olympics and the Super Bowl. One of Kunzel's most notable achievements was his work with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. Under his leadership, the orchestra released over 90 recordings, many of which were bestsellers. He also led the orchestra on numerous tours, including performances in Europe, Asia, and Australia. In recognition of his contributions to the orchestra, Kunzel was awarded the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. Kunzel was also a prolific recording artist in his own right. He released over 50 albums, many of which featured his own arrangements of classical music. He was particularly known for his recordings of film music, including the music of John Williams and the music from the Star Wars and Indiana Jones films. Throughout his career, Kunzel received numerous awards and honors. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2006, the highest honor given to artists by the United States government. He was also inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame and the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards Hall of Fame. Kunzel's career was cut short when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2009. He passed away on September 1, 2009, at the age of 74. His legacy lives on through his recordings and the many musicians he inspired throughout his career.
