Sergey Rachmaninov's 'Preludes (13), Op. 32' is a collection of 13 solo piano pieces, composed between 1910 and 1913. The work was premiered by the composer himself in Moscow on February 10, 1913. The 13 preludes are each in a different key, and range in length from just over a minute to nearly six minutes. They are as follows: 1. C major - Allegro vivace 2. B flat minor - Allegretto 3. E major - Allegro vivace 4. E minor - Allegro con brio 5. G major - Moderato 6. F minor - Allegro appassionato 7. F major - Moderato 8. A minor - Vivo 9. A major - Allegro moderato 10. B minor - Lento 11. B major - Allegro molto 12. G sharp minor - Allegro 13. D flat major - Grave The preludes are characterized by Rachmaninov's signature lush harmonies, virtuosic piano writing, and emotional depth. Each prelude has its own distinct character, ranging from the playful and energetic C major prelude to the mournful and introspective B flat minor prelude. The preludes are often performed as a complete set, but individual preludes are also frequently programmed on their own. The work has become a staple of the piano repertoire and is considered one of Rachmaninov's most important contributions to the genre.
