He began his musical journey at the age of five, when he started taking piano lessons from his mother, a professional pianist. Berman's talent was evident from an early age, and he was soon accepted into the prestigious Moscow Conservatory, where he studied under the tutelage of Lev Oborin, a renowned pianist and teacher. During his time at the Moscow Conservatory, Berman won several awards and accolades, including the First Prize at the All-Union Piano Competition in 1965. He also had the opportunity to perform with some of the most prominent orchestras in the Soviet Union, including the Moscow Philharmonic and the Leningrad Philharmonic. In 1973, Berman made the decision to leave the Soviet Union and move to Israel, where he continued his musical studies at the Tel Aviv University. He later moved to the United States, where he studied at the Juilliard School in New York City under the guidance of Rudolf Serkin, one of the most celebrated pianists of the 20th century. Berman's career as a concert pianist took off in the 1980s, when he began performing extensively throughout Europe and the United States.
