Clive Greensmith is a renowned cellist and chamber musician who has made a significant impact on the classical music world. Born in London, England in 1969, Greensmith began playing the cello at the age of six. He studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree with honors. He then went on to study at the Musikhochschule in Cologne, Germany, where he received a postgraduate diploma. In 1999, Greensmith became a member of the Tokyo String Quartet, one of the most celebrated chamber ensembles in the world. During his tenure with the quartet, he performed in major concert halls around the globe, including Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Sydney Opera House. He also recorded numerous albums with the quartet, including works by Beethoven, Schubert, and Mozart. In addition to his work with the Tokyo String Quartet, Greensmith has also performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has collaborated with some of the most distinguished conductors of our time, including Sir Simon Rattle, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Leonard Slatkin. Greensmith is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has served on the faculty of the Colburn School in Los Angeles and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. He has also given masterclasses at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School, the New England Conservatory, and the Royal Academy of Music. Throughout his career, Greensmith has received numerous awards and accolades. In 1995, he won first prize at the Adam International Cello Competition in New Zealand. He was also a recipient of the prestigious Piatigorsky Artist Award in 2002, which recognizes outstanding cellists who demonstrate exceptional artistry and dedication to their craft. In 2013, Greensmith left the Tokyo String Quartet to pursue a solo career and focus on his teaching. He continues to perform as a soloist and chamber musician, and is highly regarded for his technical mastery and expressive playing. His recordings have received critical acclaim, and he is widely recognized as one of the leading cellists of his generation. In addition to his musical accomplishments, Greensmith is also an avid cyclist and has completed several long-distance rides for charity. He currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife and two children.
