The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is a world-renowned classical music ensemble based in Detroit, Michigan. Founded in 1914, the DSO has a rich history of musical excellence and community engagement. The DSO was founded by ten Detroiters who were passionate about classical music and wanted to bring world-class performances to their city. The orchestra's first concert was held on February 26, 1914, at the old Detroit Opera House. The program included works by Beethoven, Wagner, and Tchaikovsky, and was conducted by Weston Gales. Over the years, the DSO has had many notable conductors, including Ossip Gabrilowitsch, Paul Paray, Antal Doráti, and Neeme Järvi. Each of these conductors brought their own unique style and vision to the orchestra, helping to shape its sound and reputation. One of the DSO's most significant achievements was its move to Orchestra Hall in 1919. Orchestra Hall was designed by renowned architect C. Howard Crane and was considered one of the finest concert halls in the world. The DSO made Orchestra Hall its home for over 50 years, until it moved to the Max M. Fisher Music Center in 2003. Throughout its history, the DSO has been committed to community engagement and education. In 1919, the orchestra established the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Civic Orchestra, which provided opportunities for amateur musicians to perform alongside professional musicians. The DSO also established a youth orchestra in 1966, which has since become one of the most respected youth orchestras in the country. The DSO has also been recognized for its innovative programming and collaborations. In 1964, the orchestra performed the world premiere of Aaron Copland's "Connotations" under the direction of Antal Doráti. The DSO has also collaborated with a wide range of artists, including jazz legend Duke Ellington, rock musician Frank Zappa, and hip-hop artist Nas. In recent years, the DSO has continued to push the boundaries of classical music. In 2017, the orchestra performed the world premiere of "Detroit '67," a multimedia work that explored the city's history and culture. The DSO has also embraced technology, launching a free webcast series in 2011 that has reached audiences around the world. The DSO has received numerous awards and accolades throughout its history. In 2003, the orchestra was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the highest honor given to artists and arts patrons by the United States government. The DSO has also won multiple Grammy Awards, including Best Orchestral Performance in 2018 for its recording of Leonard Slatkin's "The Ascent." The DSO's current music director is Jader Bignamini, who was appointed in 2020. Bignamini is a rising star in the classical music world and has conducted orchestras around the world, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. The DSO's musicians are some of the finest in the world, and many have won prestigious awards and competitions. The orchestra's concertmaster is Yoonshin Song, who has performed as a soloist with orchestras around the world and has won numerous awards, including the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition. In conclusion, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra is a world-class classical music ensemble with a rich history of musical excellence and community engagement.
