Stockholm Sinfonietta is a classical music ensemble based in Stockholm, Sweden. The ensemble was founded in 1990 by conductor and composer Mats Larsson Gothe, with the aim of creating a flexible and dynamic chamber orchestra that could perform a wide range of repertoire, from Baroque to contemporary music. The ensemble's core members are a group of highly skilled musicians, many of whom are also members of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. The ensemble's size varies depending on the repertoire being performed, ranging from a small chamber group to a full orchestra. Over the years, Stockholm Sinfonietta has become known for its innovative programming and collaborations with leading composers and soloists. The ensemble has premiered numerous works by contemporary composers, including Anders Hillborg, Karin Rehnqvist, and Tobias Broström. One of the ensemble's most notable collaborations was with the Swedish pop group ABBA, for a performance of their hit song "Dancing Queen" at the Nobel Prize ceremony in 2008. The performance was widely praised and helped to bring classical music to a wider audience. Stockholm Sinfonietta has also been recognized for its outstanding performances and recordings. The ensemble has won several awards, including the Swedish Grammy for Best Classical Album in 2003 for their recording of Anders Hillborg's "Eleven Gates," and the Diapason d'Or award in 2011 for their recording of Karin Rehnqvist's "Puksånger." In addition to their regular concert series in Stockholm, Stockholm Sinfonietta has performed at major festivals and venues around the world, including the BBC Proms in London, the Salzburg Festival, and the Lincoln Center in New York.
