SwedenBirth:May 15, 1908 in Åkarp, SwedenDeath:December 27, 1986 in Hälsingborg, SwedenPeriod:ContemporaryModernGenre:ConcertoOrchestralLars-Erik Larsson was a Swedish composer who was born on May 15, 1908, in Åkarp, a small town in southern Sweden. He was the son of a schoolteacher and grew up in a musical family. His father played the organ and his mother sang in the church choir. Lars-Erik began playing the piano at a young age and showed a talent for music early on. Lars-Erik attended the Stockholm Conservatory, where he studied composition with Ernst Ellberg and piano with Olallo Morales. He graduated in 1932 and went on to study in Paris with Albert Roussel. During his time in Paris, Lars-Erik was exposed to the music of Stravinsky, Ravel, and Debussy, which had a significant influence on his own compositions. Lars-Erik's early works were influenced by the neoclassical style, which was popular in the 1920s and 1930s. His first major work was the Concert Overture No. 1, which was premiered in 1933. The piece was well-received and established Lars-Erik as a promising young composer. In 1935, Lars-Erik was appointed as a teacher of composition at the Stockholm Conservatory, where he remained for the rest of his career. He also served as the conductor of the Stockholm Concert Society from 1947 to 1953. Lars-Erik's most famous work is his Concertino for Trombone and String Orchestra, which was composed in 1955. The piece is a virtuosic showcase for the trombone and has become a staple of the trombone repertoire. Other notable works by Lars-Erik include his Symphony No. 1, which was composed in 1944, and his A Winter's Tale, which was composed in 1959. Lars-Erik's music is characterized by its clarity, elegance, and craftsmanship. He was a master of orchestration and had a keen sense of melody and harmony. His music is often compared to that of his contemporary, Carl Nielsen, who was also known for his neoclassical style. Lars-Erik died on December 27, 1986, in Helsingborg, Sweden. He left behind a legacy of over 200 works, including orchestral, chamber, and vocal music. His music continues to be performed and recorded today, and he is considered one of Sweden's most important composers of the 20th century.More....
