Born on October 12, 1914, in Stockholm, Sweden, Westerberg showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at a young age. He went on to study at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he received a degree in composition in 1937. After completing his studies, Westerberg began working as a freelance composer and pianist, performing in various concerts and recitals throughout Sweden. He quickly gained a reputation for his innovative compositions and virtuosic piano playing, and his music was soon being performed by some of the most prestigious orchestras and ensembles in the country. In 1945, Westerberg was appointed as the conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for over a decade. During his tenure, he led the orchestra in numerous performances of both classical and contemporary works, and he was widely praised for his skillful and nuanced interpretations of the music. In addition to his work with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Westerberg also served as the conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra from 1952 to 1958. During this time, he led the orchestra in several notable performances, including the world premiere of his own composition, "Symphony No. 2." Throughout his career, Westerberg was a prolific composer, producing a wide range of works in various genres. His compositions were characterized by their lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and inventive use of orchestration. Some of his most famous works include the ballet "The Tempest," the opera "The Emperor of Atlantis," and the choral work "The Ballad of the Mermaid." Westerberg's contributions to the world of classical music were widely recognized during his lifetime. He received numerous awards and honors, including the Litteris et Artibus medal from the Swedish government in 1955 and the Royal Swedish Academy of Music's Gold Medal in 1974. He was also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts. Despite his many achievements, Westerberg remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his life. He continued to compose and perform until his death on October 19, 1982, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful and innovative music that continues to inspire and delight audiences around the world.More....
