Franz Berwald was a Swedish composer and violinist who was born on July 23, 1796, in Stockholm, Sweden. He was the son of a German immigrant who was a successful musician and conductor in Stockholm. Berwald's father recognized his son's musical talent at an early age and began teaching him the violin when he was just six years old. Berwald's musical education continued at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, where he studied composition and violin. He was a talented student and quickly gained recognition for his skills as a composer. In 1819, he was awarded a scholarship to study music in Berlin, where he continued to develop his skills as a composer and musician. After returning to Sweden, Berwald worked as a violinist in the Royal Opera Orchestra in Stockholm. However, he was not content with just playing in the orchestra and began to focus more on his career as a composer. In 1828, he composed his first symphony, which was well-received by audiences and critics alike. Berwald's career as a composer continued to flourish, and he composed a number of works in a variety of genres, including symphonies, operas, and chamber music. His music was characterized by its innovative harmonies and use of unconventional forms and structures. One of Berwald's most famous works is his Symphony No. 3 in C major, which he composed in 1845. The symphony is notable for its use of unconventional forms and structures, including a scherzo that is longer than the first movement. The symphony was not well-received when it was first performed, but it has since become one of Berwald's most popular works. Berwald's other notable works include his opera Estrella de Soria, which he composed in 1862. The opera is based on a Spanish legend and is notable for its use of Spanish rhythms and melodies. Berwald also composed a number of chamber music works, including his String Quartet No. 1 in G minor, which is considered one of his finest works. Despite his success as a composer, Berwald struggled to make a living from his music. He was forced to take on a number of odd jobs to support himself and his family, including working as a glassblower and a manager of a sawmill. He also suffered from poor health throughout his life, which made it difficult for him to focus on his music. Berwald's music was largely forgotten after his death in 1868, and it was not until the 20th century that his works began to be rediscovered. Today, he is considered one of Sweden's greatest composers and his music is celebrated for its innovative harmonies and unconventional forms.
