Born on 17th October 1946 in Budapest, Hungary, Onczay was introduced to music at a young age by his parents, who were both musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Onczay started playing the cello at the age of six and showed exceptional talent from the beginning. Onczay's musical education began at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where he studied under the guidance of Ede Banda and Ferenc Rados. He graduated with honors in 1969 and went on to pursue further studies in Germany with the renowned cellist, Enrico Mainardi. Onczay's training under Mainardi was a turning point in his career, and he credits his mentor for shaping his musical style and approach. In 1972, Onczay won the prestigious Pablo Casals International Cello Competition in Budapest, which marked the beginning of his international career. He went on to perform in major concert halls across Europe, Asia, and the United States, collaborating with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. Onczay's repertoire is vast and includes works by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Dvorak, Haydn, Schumann, and Tchaikovsky, among others. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Hungarian composers, such as Kodaly and Bartok, and has recorded several albums dedicated to their music. Throughout his career, Onczay has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1980, he was awarded the Liszt Prize, one of Hungary's highest honors for musicians. He has also been awarded the Kossuth Prize, the Bartok-Pasztory Prize, and the Hungarian Order of Merit. Onczay has been a professor of cello at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music since 1975 and has trained several generations of cellists. He is known for his dedication to teaching and has been a mentor to many young musicians who have gone on to have successful careers in music. Some of Onczay's most memorable performances include his debut at the Carnegie Hall in New York in 1977, where he performed the Dvorak Cello Concerto with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Zubin Mehta. He has also performed at the Salzburg Festival, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, among others. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Onczay is also a passionate chamber musician and has collaborated with some of the world's leading musicians, including pianist Andras Schiff, violinist Gidon Kremer, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
