Jean-Baptiste Krumpholtz was a prominent composer and harpist of the Classical era. He was born on December 3, 1747, in the town of Teplice, in the present-day Czech Republic. His father, Johann Krumpholtz, was a harpist and composer, and his mother, Maria Anna, was a singer. Jean-Baptiste was the youngest of their six children, and he showed an early interest in music. At the age of six, Jean-Baptiste began to study the harp with his father. He quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument, and by the age of ten, he was performing in public. In 1762, when he was fifteen years old, he was appointed harpist to the court of Prince Charles of Saxony. This was a significant achievement for such a young musician, and it gave him the opportunity to perform for some of the most important people in Europe. In 1764, Krumpholtz moved to Paris, where he quickly established himself as one of the leading harpists of the city. He performed in concerts and salons, and he also began to compose music for the harp. His compositions were well-received, and he soon became known as one of the most innovative and talented harpists of his time. Krumpholtz's music was characterized by its virtuosity and its use of the full range of the harp. He was one of the first composers to use the pedals of the harp, which allowed him to play in different keys and to create a wider range of harmonies. He also experimented with different tunings of the harp, which gave his music a unique sound. One of Krumpholtz's most significant works is his Concerto for Harp and Orchestra in C major. This piece, which was composed in 1779, is one of the first harp concertos ever written. It is a virtuosic work that showcases the full range of the harp, and it has become a staple of the harp repertoire. Krumpholtz also composed a significant amount of chamber music for the harp. His Sonatas for Harp and Violin, which were composed in the 1770s, are some of his most popular works. These pieces are characterized by their elegant melodies and their intricate interplay between the harp and the violin. In addition to his work as a composer, Krumpholtz was also a respected teacher. He taught the harp to many students, including his daughter, Anne-Marie Krumpholtz, who became a prominent harpist in her own right. Krumpholtz's career was cut short by his untimely death in 1790. He was only 42 years old when he died, but he had already made a significant contribution to the development of the harp as a solo instrument. His music continues to be performed and studied today, and he is remembered as one of the most important harpists and composers of the Classical era.
