Dominique Visse is a French countertenor and conductor who has made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. He was born on October 17, 1955, in Rouen, France, and grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a pianist. Visse showed an early interest in music and began singing in a choir at the age of six. Visse studied music at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, where he specialized in early music. He was particularly interested in the music of the Baroque period and became known for his performances of works by composers such as Monteverdi, Handel, and Bach. Visse made his professional debut in 1978, singing the role of Oberon in Benjamin Britten's opera A Midsummer Night's Dream. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented countertenor and began performing with some of the world's leading early music ensembles, including Les Arts Florissants, La Chapelle Royale, and the Ensemble Clément Janequin. One of Visse's most notable performances was in the 1987 production of Monteverdi's L'Orfeo at the Opéra de Lyon. He sang the role of La Musica and was praised for his powerful and expressive performance. The production was a critical and commercial success and helped to establish Visse as one of the leading countertenors of his generation. Visse has also been recognized for his work as a conductor.
