Jean-Claude Malgoire was a French conductor and flutist who was born on November 25, 1940, in Avignon, France. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Malgoire began playing the flute at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and later at the Schola Cantorum in Paris. Malgoire began his career as a flutist, playing with various orchestras in France and Europe. He was a member of the Ensemble Baroque de Paris and the Ensemble Vocal et Instrumental de Lausanne. He also played with the Orchestre de Paris and the Orchestre National de France. In the 1970s, Malgoire began to focus more on conducting. He founded the La Grande Écurie et la Chambre du Roy, an ensemble that specialized in Baroque music. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and Malgoire's innovative interpretations of Baroque music. Malgoire's conducting career took off in the 1980s, and he became one of the most sought-after conductors in Europe. He conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He also conducted at major music festivals, such as the Salzburg Festival and the Edinburgh Festival. One of Malgoire's most significant achievements was his work on the opera stage. He conducted many operas, including works by Mozart, Handel, and Gluck. He was particularly known for his interpretations of Baroque operas, and he was instrumental in reviving interest in these works. He conducted the first modern performances of many Baroque operas, including Rameau's Les Indes Galantes and Lully's Armide. Malgoire was also a prolific recording artist. He recorded over 100 albums, many of which were critically acclaimed. His recordings of Baroque music were particularly popular, and he won several awards for his recordings, including a Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording in 1986. Malgoire was known for his innovative interpretations of classical music. He was not afraid to take risks and experiment with different styles and approaches. He was particularly interested in the historical performance practice movement, which sought to recreate the sound and style of music from different periods in history. Malgoire was also a passionate advocate for music education. He founded the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, which offered courses and workshops on Baroque music. He also taught at the Conservatoire de Paris and was a mentor to many young musicians. Malgoire continued to perform and conduct until his death on April 14, 2018, at the age of 77. He left behind a legacy as one of the most influential conductors of his generation.
