Born on 1st August 1955 in Brussels, Belgium, de Mey grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, de Mey showed a keen interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of six. De Mey's love for music continued to grow, and he began singing in a choir when he was ten years old. He quickly discovered that he had a natural talent for singing and decided to pursue a career in music. He began studying at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he received training in voice and piano. After completing his studies, de Mey began his professional career as a tenor. He made his debut in 1980 at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, where he performed the role of Tamino in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." This performance marked the beginning of a long and successful career for de Mey. Over the years, de Mey has performed in some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Paris Opera. He has also worked with some of the most renowned conductors and directors in the industry, including Sir Simon Rattle, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and Robert Carsen. One of de Mey's most notable performances was his portrayal of the role of Orfeo in Monteverdi's "L'Orfeo" at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels in 1987. This performance was widely acclaimed and helped establish de Mey as one of the leading tenors of his generation. In addition to his work in opera, de Mey has also performed in numerous concerts and recitals. He has a particular affinity for the music of Bach and has performed in many of his cantatas and oratorios. He has also recorded several albums, including "Bach: Cantatas" and "Mozart: Arias." In 1991, he was awarded the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in recognition of his contributions to the arts.
