Xerse is an opera composed by Francesco Cavalli, an Italian composer of the Baroque era. The opera was first performed in Venice in 1654 and is based on a libretto by Nicolò Minato. The plot of the opera revolves around the Persian king Xerxes, who is in love with the princess Romilda. However, Romilda is in love with Xerxes' brother Arsamene, who is also in love with her. The opera follows the love triangle between the three characters and the various obstacles they face in their pursuit of love. The opera is divided into three acts and features a variety of musical styles, including recitative, arias, and ensemble pieces. The music is characterized by its use of elaborate vocal ornamentation, intricate harmonies, and expressive melodies. The opera also features a number of instrumental interludes, including a sinfonia that opens the second act. One of the most notable aspects of Xerse is its use of gender-bending roles. In the original production, the role of Xerxes was played by a castrato, a male singer who had been castrated before puberty to preserve his high singing voice. The role of Romilda was also played by a male singer, as was common in Baroque opera. This tradition of gender-bending roles was a hallmark of Baroque opera and was intended to showcase the virtuosity of the singers. Xerse was a popular opera in its time and was performed throughout Europe in the decades following its premiere. However, it fell out of favor in the 18th and 19th centuries and was not revived until the 20th century. Today, it is considered one of Cavalli's most important works and is regularly performed by opera companies around the world. Its enduring popularity is a testament to the enduring appeal of Baroque opera and the timeless themes of love and desire that it explores.
