Role:EnsembleCappella Mediterránea is a classical music ensemble that specializes in the performance of early music from the Mediterranean region. The group was founded in 2005 by the French countertenor and conductor Leonardo García Alarcón, who serves as its artistic director. García Alarcón was born in 1976 in La Plata, Argentina, and began his musical studies at a young age. He studied piano, organ, and composition at the National University of La Plata, and later pursued further studies in Europe. He studied conducting with Gabriel Garrido and René Jacobs, and also studied harpsichord and organ. In 2005, García Alarcón founded Cappella Mediterránea with the goal of exploring the rich musical traditions of the Mediterranean region. The ensemble is based in Basel, Switzerland, and draws its members from a variety of countries, including France, Italy, Spain, and Argentina. Since its founding, Cappella Mediterránea has become known for its innovative and dynamic performances of early music. The ensemble has performed at major festivals and concert halls throughout Europe, including the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, the Salzburg Festival, and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. One of the highlights of Cappella Mediterránea's career was its performance of Monteverdi's L'Orfeo at the Salzburg Festival in 2018. The production, which was directed by Pierre Audi, received critical acclaim for its innovative staging and powerful performances. Cappella Mediterránea has also received numerous awards and accolades for its recordings. The ensemble's recording of Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine was awarded the Diapason d'Or in 2011, and its recording of Cavalli's La Calisto was awarded the Choc de Classica in 2014. In addition to its performances and recordings, Cappella Mediterránea is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly conducts workshops and masterclasses for young musicians, and has collaborated with schools and universities throughout Europe. Overall, Cappella Mediterránea has established itself as one of the leading ensembles in the field of early music. Its innovative and dynamic performances, combined with its commitment to education and outreach, have made it a beloved and respected institution in the classical music world.More....
