Philippe Jaroussky is a French countertenor who has become one of the most prominent and sought-after classical music artists of his generation. Born on February 13, 1978, in Maisons-Laffitte, a suburb of Paris, Jaroussky showed an early interest in music and began studying piano at the age of six. However, it was not until he discovered the countertenor voice in his teens that he found his true calling. Jaroussky's vocal talent was quickly recognized, and he began studying at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he trained with Nicole Fallien and Gérard Lesne. He also studied with the renowned Italian countertenor, Andrea Scholl, who became a mentor and friend. Jaroussky's early performances were mainly in baroque music, and he quickly gained a reputation for his virtuosic technique and expressive interpretation. In 1999, Jaroussky founded his own ensemble, Artaserse, which specializes in the performance of baroque music. The group has performed at major festivals and concert halls throughout Europe and has released several acclaimed recordings. Jaroussky has also collaborated with many other leading musicians and ensembles, including William Christie and Les Arts Florissants, René Jacobs and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, and Jordi Savall and Hesperion XXI. Jaroussky's breakthrough came in 2002 when he won the prestigious French singing competition, Les Victoires de la Musique Classique, in the category of "Révélation Artiste Lyrique" (Best New Classical Artist). This award brought him to the attention of a wider audience and led to many more opportunities for performances and recordings. Since then, Jaroussky has become one of the most in-demand countertenors in the world, performing at major opera houses and concert halls across Europe, North America, and Asia. He has also recorded over 80 albums, many of which have won awards and critical acclaim. Some of Jaroussky's most notable performances include his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 2011, where he sang the role of the sorceress Armindo in Handel's "Partenope." He has also performed at the Royal Opera House in London, the Salzburg Festival, the Berlin State Opera, and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. Jaroussky's repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing not only baroque music but also works from the classical and romantic periods. He has recorded albums of music by composers such as Vivaldi, Handel, Bach, Mozart, Schubert, and Berlioz, as well as lesser-known composers such as Caldara, Porpora, and Hasse. In addition to his performing career, Jaroussky is also a passionate advocate for music education and outreach. He has worked with young musicians and singers through various programs and initiatives, including the Jaroussky Academy, which he founded in 2016 to provide training and support for young singers. Jaroussky has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Echo Klassik Award, the Diapason d'Or, and the Gramophone Award. In 2016, he was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in recognition of his contributions to the arts. Despite his many achievements, Jaroussky remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to push himself to new heights of artistic excellence and to inspire audiences around the world with his beautiful and expressive singing.
