Ensemble Artaserse is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2002 by four musicians who shared a passion for Baroque music. The ensemble takes its name from the Persian king Artaxerxes, who was known for his love of music and patronage of the arts. The founding members of Ensemble Artaserse were countertenor Philippe Jaroussky, harpsichordist Olivier Baumont, cellist Christophe Coin, and theorbo player Eduardo Egüez. All four musicians were highly respected in the world of Baroque music and had performed with some of the most prestigious ensembles in Europe. From the beginning, Ensemble Artaserse was dedicated to exploring the rich repertoire of Baroque music, with a particular focus on the works of Italian composers such as Vivaldi, Handel, and Scarlatti. The ensemble's performances were characterized by their virtuosity, precision, and emotional depth, and they quickly gained a reputation as one of the most exciting and innovative Baroque ensembles in Europe. Over the years, Ensemble Artaserse has undergone some changes in its membership, but the core values and musical vision of the ensemble have remained the same. Today, the ensemble is led by Philippe Jaroussky, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest countertenors of his generation. Other members of the ensemble include violinist Julien Chauvin, cellist Atsushi Sakaï, and harpsichordist Justin Taylor. Ensemble Artaserse has performed at some of the most prestigious concert halls and festivals in Europe, including the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, the Wigmore Hall in London, and the Salzburg Festival. They have also toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, and have collaborated with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. One of the highlights of Ensemble Artaserse's career was their performance of Handel's opera "Giulio Cesare" at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in 2012. The production, which was directed by Laurent Pelly and conducted by Emmanuelle Haïm, received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, and was hailed as a triumph of Baroque opera. Ensemble Artaserse has also received numerous awards and accolades for their recordings, which have been praised for their technical excellence and musical sensitivity. Their recording of Vivaldi's "Stabat Mater" won the prestigious Diapason d'Or award in 2007, and their recording of Handel's "Arias for Senesino" was named "Recording of the Year" by Gramophone magazine in 2015. Despite their many achievements, Ensemble Artaserse remains committed to their mission of exploring the rich and diverse world of Baroque music. They continue to push the boundaries of their art form, seeking out new and innovative ways to bring the music of the past to life for modern audiences.
