ItalyBirth:1600 in Rome, ItalyDeath:November 12, 1679Period:BaroqueGenre:ChoralVocalGiovanni Felice Sances was a Baroque composer born in Rome, Italy in 1600. Not much is known about his early life, but it is believed that he received his musical education in Rome and possibly studied with the famous composer Giacomo Carissimi. Sances began his career as a singer and worked as a tenor in various churches and courts throughout Italy. He eventually settled in Vienna, Austria, where he became a member of the court chapel and served as a singer and composer for the Habsburgs. Sances’ music is characterized by its expressive melodies, intricate harmonies, and use of chromaticism. He was particularly known for his vocal music, which included operas, oratorios, and sacred music. His works were often performed in the courts of Europe and were highly regarded by his contemporaries. One of Sances’ most famous works is his Stabat Mater, a sacred vocal piece that depicts the sorrowful Virgin Mary at the foot of the cross. The piece is known for its emotional intensity and use of dissonance to convey the pain and suffering of the crucifixion. Another notable work is his opera, Il Martirio di Santa Caterina, which tells the story of the martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Sances’ music was highly influential in the development of Baroque music and had a lasting impact on composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel. Despite his contributions to the world of music, Sances’ life and works have largely been forgotten in modern times. However, his legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and studied by musicians and scholars around the world.More....
