Ensemble Matheus is a classical music group that was founded in 1991 by Jean-Christophe Spinosi, a French conductor and violinist. The group is based in Brest, France, and is known for its performances of Baroque and Classical music. Spinosi was born in 1967 in Clichy, France, and began playing the violin at a young age. He studied at the Conservatoire National SupĂ©rieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, where he won several awards for his violin playing. After completing his studies, he began performing as a soloist and chamber musician, and also began conducting. In 1991, Spinosi founded Ensemble Matheus with a group of musicians who shared his passion for Baroque and Classical music. The group takes its name from the Greek mathematician Pythagoras, who believed that music was a form of mathematical expression. The group's mission is to bring this mathematical precision to their performances of Baroque and Classical music. Ensemble Matheus quickly gained a reputation for their energetic and passionate performances, and began touring extensively throughout Europe and the United States. They have performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the ThĂ©Ă¢tre des Champs-ÉlysĂ©es in Paris, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and Carnegie Hall in New York. One of the highlights of Ensemble Matheus's career was their performance at the 2004 Salzburg Festival, where they performed Handel's opera "Giulio Cesare" to critical acclaim. The performance was later released on DVD and received several awards, including the Diapason d'Or and the Choc du Monde de la Musique. Ensemble Matheus has also collaborated with several renowned soloists, including mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli and pianist Alexandre Tharaud. Their recordings with Bartoli, including "Sacrificium" and "Mission," have been particularly successful, and have won several awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Classical Vocal Performance. In addition to their performances and recordings, Ensemble Matheus is also committed to music education and outreach. They regularly hold workshops and masterclasses for young musicians, and have also performed in schools and community centers to introduce classical music to new audiences. Ensemble Matheus has received numerous awards and accolades throughout their career. In addition to the awards mentioned above, they have also received the Victoires de la Musique Classique award in France, and the Echo Klassik award in Germany. Today, Ensemble Matheus continues to be one of the most respected and innovative classical music groups in the world. They are known for their passionate and precise performances, and their commitment to bringing classical music to new audiences. With Jean-Christophe Spinosi at the helm, Ensemble Matheus is sure to continue making waves in the classical music world for years to come.
