The libretto was written by Scipione Maffei and is based on Greek mythology. The opera premiered on January 6, 1732, at the Teatro Sant'Angelo in Venice. The plot of La Fida ninfa revolves around the love triangle between the nymph Licori, the shepherd Elpino, and the sea god Neptune. Licori is in love with Elpino, but Neptune also desires her. To win Licori's heart, Neptune disguises himself as Elpino and tricks Licori into believing that he is the real Elpino. Meanwhile, the real Elpino is captured by pirates and sold into slavery. With the help of Licori's sister, Morasto, and the goddess Diana, Elpino is eventually freed and reunited with Licori. The opera is divided into three acts and features a total of 38 musical numbers, including arias, duets, and choruses. The music is typical of Vivaldi's style, with virtuosic vocal writing and elaborate instrumental accompaniment. The opera also features several dance movements, including a minuet and a gavotte. One of the characteristics of La Fida ninfa is its use of mythology as a source of inspiration. The opera draws on the stories of Greek gods and goddesses, as well as the pastoral tradition of Italian opera. Another characteristic is its emphasis on vocal virtuosity, with many of the arias featuring elaborate runs and ornamentation. La Fida ninfa was well-received at its premiere and remained popular throughout the 18th century. However, it fell out of favor in the 19th century and was not performed again until the 20th century. Today, it is considered one of Vivaldi's most important operas and is regularly performed in opera houses around the world.More....
