Fabio Bonizzoni is a renowned Italian harpsichordist, conductor, and musicologist who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on October 12, 1968, in Milan, Italy, Bonizzoni showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later switched to the harpsichord, which became his primary instrument. Bonizzoni received his formal music education at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan, where he studied harpsichord with Maria Teresa Garatti and composition with Giuseppe Colardo. He also attended masterclasses with renowned harpsichordists such as Gustav Leonhardt and Ton Koopman, which helped him refine his skills and develop his unique style. In 1990, Bonizzoni founded the ensemble La Risonanza, which specializes in performing Baroque music on period instruments. The ensemble quickly gained recognition for its innovative interpretations of Baroque music and its commitment to historical accuracy. Bonizzoni served as the ensemble's artistic director and harpsichordist, leading it to numerous successful performances and recordings. One of Bonizzoni's most notable performances was his 2001 debut at the Salzburg Festival, where he conducted a production of Handel's opera "Ariodante." The performance was widely praised for its energy, precision, and emotional depth, and it helped establish Bonizzoni as a leading conductor in the Baroque music scene. Bonizzoni has also collaborated with many other prominent musicians and ensembles, including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Academy of Ancient Music, and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. He has conducted numerous operas, oratorios, and concerts, and has been invited to perform at major music festivals around the world. In addition to his work as a performer and conductor, Bonizzoni is also a respected musicologist who has published several scholarly articles and books on Baroque music. He has conducted extensive research on the music of composers such as Handel, Vivaldi, and Bach, and has contributed to the development of historically informed performance practices. Bonizzoni's contributions to the world of classical music have been widely recognized, and he has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 2003, he was awarded the prestigious Abbiati Prize for Best Conductor, and in 2010 he received the Echo Klassik Award for his recording of Handel's "Ariodante." He has also been awarded the Diapason d'Or, the Gramophone Award, and the Choc de Classica, among others. Despite his many achievements, Bonizzoni remains dedicated to his craft and continues to push the boundaries of Baroque music performance. He is known for his passionate and expressive interpretations of Baroque music, and his commitment to historical accuracy and authenticity has helped shape the way that Baroque music is performed and appreciated today.
