Artist Info
Genre:ChamberFretwork is a renowned classical music ensemble that specializes in the performance of early music, particularly music written for viols. The ensemble was founded in 1985 by Richard Boothby, a British cellist and viol player, and Wendy Gillespie, an American viol player. Since its inception, Fretwork has become one of the most respected and sought-after early music ensembles in the world. The founding of Fretwork was the result of a chance meeting between Boothby and Gillespie at a music festival in Germany. Both musicians were passionate about early music and had a shared interest in the viol, a stringed instrument that was popular in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. They decided to form an ensemble that would focus on the performance of music written for viols, and Fretwork was born. The original members of Fretwork were Richard Boothby, Wendy Gillespie, Julia Hodgson, William Hunt, and Richard Campbell. Over the years, the ensemble has undergone some changes in membership, but Boothby has remained a constant presence as the group's artistic director and principal cellist. Fretwork's repertoire is primarily focused on music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, with a particular emphasis on English composers such as William Byrd, John Dowland, and Henry Purcell. The ensemble has also commissioned new works from contemporary composers, including Gavin Bryars, Michael Nyman, and Nico Muhly. One of Fretwork's most notable performances was their 1991 concert at the Wigmore Hall in London, which was recorded and released as their debut album, "In Nomine." The album received critical acclaim and helped to establish Fretwork as a leading early music ensemble. Since then, the group has released numerous albums, including "The English Viol," "The Spirit of Gambo," and "The World Encompassed." Fretwork has also collaborated with a number of other musicians and ensembles over the years, including the Hilliard Ensemble, soprano Emma Kirkby, and lutenist Christopher Wilson. In 2009, the ensemble performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company in a production of "The Tempest," which was directed by Rupert Goold and featured music by composer Adrian Lee. In addition to their performances and recordings, Fretwork has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1992, they were awarded the prestigious Diapason d'Or for their album "In Nomine." They have also been nominated for several Grammy Awards, including Best Chamber Music Performance and Best Classical Crossover Album. Fretwork's commitment to early music and their exceptional musicianship have made them one of the most respected and beloved ensembles in the classical music world. Their performances are characterized by a deep understanding and appreciation of the music they play, as well as a sense of joy and enthusiasm that is infectious to audiences. Whether performing in a concert hall or on a theater stage, Fretwork's music is always a delight to hear.More....
