Antony Holborne was a prominent English composer and lutenist of the Renaissance era. He was born in 1545 in the town of Holborn, London, and little is known about his early life and education. However, it is believed that he received his musical training from some of the leading musicians of his time. Holborne's career as a musician began in the 1560s when he became a member of the household of Sir Thomas Heneage, a prominent courtier and patron of the arts. Holborne's association with Heneage gave him the opportunity to perform at court and to meet other musicians and composers of the time. Holborne's reputation as a lutenist and composer grew rapidly, and he soon became one of the most sought-after musicians in England. He was appointed as a musician to the court of Queen Elizabeth I in 1584, and he remained in this position until his death in 1602.
