Canadian Brass is a classical music ensemble that has been entertaining audiences around the world for over 50 years. The group was founded in 1970 by tuba player Chuck Daellenbach and trombonist Gene Watts, who were both members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at the time. They were joined by trumpeters Stuart Laughton and Graeme Page, and horn player David Ohanian to form the original lineup of the group. The ensemble quickly gained popularity for their unique blend of classical music and humor, and they began touring extensively throughout Canada and the United States. In 1972, they released their first album, "Canadian Brass," which featured arrangements of classical works by composers such as Bach, Handel, and Mozart. Over the years, the lineup of Canadian Brass has changed several times, with Daellenbach being the only original member still performing with the group. Other notable members have included trumpeters Fred Mills and Ronald Romm, horn player David Bourque, and trombonist Achilles Liarmakopoulos. One of the highlights of Canadian Brass's career was their performance at the 1986 Expo in Vancouver, where they played for an audience of over 13,000 people. They have also performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. In addition to their live performances, Canadian Brass has released over 100 albums, including collaborations with artists such as jazz pianist George Shearing and soprano Benita Valente. They have also appeared on numerous television shows, including "The Tonight Show" and "Sesame Street." Throughout their career, Canadian Brass has received numerous awards and honors for their contributions to classical music. In 1998, they were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and in 2013, they received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award, which is one of Canada's highest honors for the performing arts. Despite their many accomplishments, Canadian Brass remains committed to their mission of bringing classical music to audiences around the world. They continue to tour extensively and collaborate with other artists to create new and innovative works that showcase the beauty and versatility of classical music.
