United KingdomBirth:October 25, 1575 in Elsted, Sussex, EnglandDeath:December 1, 1623 in London, EnglandPeriod:RenaissanceGenre:ChoralVocalThomas Weelkes was an English composer and organist who lived during the Renaissance period. He was born in Sussex, England in 1576, and little is known about his early life. However, it is believed that he received his musical education at the Chichester Cathedral, where he served as a chorister. Weelkes began his career as a musician in 1598 when he was appointed as the organist at Winchester College. He held this position for only a year before moving to Chichester Cathedral, where he served as the organist until 1602. During this time, he also composed a number of works, including madrigals, anthems, and keyboard pieces. In 1602, Weelkes was appointed as the organist at the Chapel Royal, where he remained until his death in 1623. It was during this time that he composed some of his most famous works, including his madrigals and anthems. Weelkes was known for his innovative and experimental approach to music, and his works often featured unusual harmonies and rhythms. He was also known for his use of word painting, which involved setting the music to the text in a way that reflected the meaning of the words. One of Weelkes' most famous works is his madrigal "As Vesta Was from Latmos Hill Descending," which was published in 1601. The piece is a celebration of the goddess Vesta and features complex harmonies and intricate vocal lines. It is considered one of the finest examples of English madrigal writing. Another famous work by Weelkes is his anthem "When David Heard," which was composed in 1616. The piece is a setting of the biblical story of King David's grief over the death of his son Absalom. The music is somber and mournful, reflecting the sadness of the text. Weelkes also composed a number of keyboard pieces, including his "Fantasia in C Major," which is a complex and virtuosic work that showcases his skill as a keyboard player. Despite his success as a composer, Weelkes was known for his difficult personality and was often involved in disputes with his colleagues. He was also known for his heavy drinking, which may have contributed to his early death at the age of 47. Despite his short life, Thomas Weelkes left a lasting legacy in the world of classical music. His innovative and experimental approach to music helped to shape the development of English madrigal writing, and his works continue to be performed and studied by musicians and music lovers around the world.More....
