Rooley's interest in music began at a young age, and he started playing the guitar when he was just 12 years old. He later went on to study music at the University of Sussex, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966. After completing his studies, Rooley began his career as a professional musician, performing with various ensembles and orchestras. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled lutenist and became known for his interpretations of early music. In 1976, he founded the Consort of Musicke, an ensemble dedicated to performing music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The Consort of Musicke quickly gained a following and became one of the most respected early music ensembles in the world. Rooley's leadership and musicianship were instrumental in the group's success, and he remained its director until 1992. During his tenure, the Consort of Musicke released numerous recordings and performed at major venues and festivals around the world.
