Rooley's interest in music began at a young age, and he started playing the guitar when he was just 12 years old. He later went on to study music at the University of Sussex, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966. After completing his studies, Rooley began his career as a professional musician, performing with various ensembles and orchestras. In 1976, he founded the Consort of Musicke, an ensemble dedicated to performing music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
