Genre:ChoralClare College Choir, Cambridge is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with its exceptional performances for over 100 years. The choir is based at Clare College, one of the constituent colleges of the University of Cambridge, and is made up of undergraduate and graduate students of the college. The choir was founded in 1866 by John Westcott, a former organ scholar of the college. Initially, the choir was made up of just 16 boys, but it has since grown to include both male and female voices. The choir has a long and illustrious history, having performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including the Royal Albert Hall, St. Paul's Cathedral, and Westminster Abbey. One of the most notable members of the choir was Sir David Willcocks, who served as the choir's director of music from 1957 to 1974. During his tenure, the choir gained international recognition for its exceptional performances and recordings. Willcocks was also responsible for introducing the tradition of singing Christmas carols from the college's chapel tower, a tradition that continues to this day. Another notable member of the choir was Timothy Brown, who served as the choir's director of music from 1979 to 2010. Under Brown's leadership, the choir continued to build on its reputation for excellence, performing at major venues and festivals around the world. Brown was also responsible for commissioning new works from some of the world's leading composers, including John Tavener and Arvo Pärt. Over the years, the choir has won numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 2000, the choir won a Gramophone Award for its recording of music by Herbert Howells, and in 2005, it won a Classical Brit Award for its recording of Handel's Messiah. The choir has also been nominated for several other awards, including a Grammy Award in 2010 for its recording of music by Benjamin Britten. Some of the choir's most memorable performances include its appearance at the Last Night of the Proms in 1995, where it performed alongside the BBC Symphony Orchestra and soprano Lesley Garrett. The choir has also performed at the Edinburgh International Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the BBC Proms. In addition to its performances, the choir is also known for its recordings, which have been praised for their clarity, precision, and beauty. Some of the choir's most popular recordings include its performances of Handel's Messiah, Bach's St. John Passion, and Vaughan Williams' Mass in G Minor. Today, the choir continues to be one of the most respected and admired classical music ensembles in the world. Under the leadership of its current director of music, Graham Ross, the choir continues to perform at major venues and festivals around the world, and to record music that inspires and delights audiences everywhere.
