Rosemary Joshua is a renowned British soprano who has made a name for herself in the world of classical music. Born on April 17, 1964, in Cardiff, Wales, Joshua grew up in a musical family. Her father was a conductor and her mother was a singer, so it was only natural that she would develop a love for music at a young age. Joshua began her musical training at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, where she studied voice and piano. She later went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she received a scholarship to continue her vocal studies. In 1990, Joshua made her professional debut at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera in the role of Barbarina in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro." This performance marked the beginning of a long and successful career for the young soprano. Over the years, Joshua has performed in some of the world's most prestigious opera houses and concert halls, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Salzburg Festival in Austria. She has also worked with some of the most renowned conductors and directors in the industry, including Sir Simon Rattle, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and Robert Carsen. One of Joshua's most notable performances was in the role of Susanna in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 1994. In 2003, Joshua won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in the role of Maria in "West Side Story" at the Royal Shakespeare Company.
