Venus and Adonis is a masque, or a type of courtly entertainment, composed by John Blow in 1683. The plot of the masque is based on the classical myth of Venus, the goddess of love, and Adonis, a handsome mortal whom she falls in love with. The story follows Venus as she tries to seduce Adonis, who is more interested in hunting than love. Despite her efforts, Adonis rejects Venus and goes hunting, where he is eventually killed by a wild boar. Venus is left heartbroken and mourns his death. The masque was first performed at the court of King Charles II in 1683, and was a great success. It was later revived in 1701, with new music by Henry Purcell, and became one of the most popular works of the Restoration period. The music of Venus and Adonis is characterized by its use of recitative, a style of singing that is closer to speech than melody. This style was popular in the Baroque period and was used to convey the emotions and drama of the story. The masque also features arias, or solo songs, which are more melodic and expressive. The movements of the masque are divided into scenes, each of which features a different character or group of characters. The music and lyrics of each scene are designed to reflect the emotions and actions of the characters, and to move the story forward. Overall, Venus and Adonis is a beautiful and moving work of Baroque music, which captures the drama and passion of the classical myth. Its popularity and enduring appeal are a testament to the skill and artistry of John Blow, one of the greatest composers of the Restoration period.
