SpainBirth:ca. 1548 in Avila, SpainDeath:August 20, 1611 in Madrid, SpainPeriod:RenaissanceGenre:ChoralTomás Luis de Victoria was a Spanish composer of the Renaissance period, born in Ávila, Spain in 1548. He was the youngest of eleven children and was raised in a musical family. His father was a barber and a singer, and his mother was a descendant of the royal family of Portugal. Victoria showed an early interest in music and began his musical education at a young age. Victoria's musical education began at the Cathedral of Ávila, where he was a choirboy. He later studied at the Jesuit Collegium Romanum in Rome, where he was a student of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. Victoria was deeply influenced by Palestrina's music, and his own compositions reflect this influence. Victoria's first published work was a collection of motets, which he dedicated to King Philip II of Spain. The collection, titled "Liber Primus Motettorum," was published in 1572. Victoria's motets were highly regarded and were performed throughout Europe. Victoria's most famous work is his "Requiem Mass," which he composed in 1603. The "Requiem Mass" is a masterpiece of Renaissance music and is considered one of the greatest works of the period. The piece is a setting of the Catholic Mass for the Dead and is known for its haunting beauty and emotional power. Victoria's other works include masses, motets, and hymns. His music is characterized by its clarity, simplicity, and emotional depth. Victoria's music is also known for its use of chromaticism, which was a new technique at the time. Victoria spent most of his career in Rome, where he was a priest and a music teacher. He was highly respected in the musical community and was known for his skill as a composer and a performer. Victoria was also a devout Catholic and his music reflects his faith. Victoria died in Madrid in 1611. His music continued to be performed and admired throughout the Baroque period and beyond. Today, Victoria is considered one of the greatest composers of the Renaissance period and his music is still performed and recorded by choirs and orchestras around the world.More....
