FranceBirth:1459Death:October 30, 1522 in Saint-Quentin, FrancePeriod:RenaissanceGenre:ChoralVocalJean Mouton was a French composer of the Renaissance period, born in 1459 in the town of Auch in Gascony, France. He was the son of a shoemaker and was raised in a family of modest means. Despite this, he showed an early aptitude for music and was sent to study at the Cathedral of Tours, where he received a thorough education in music theory and composition. Mouton's early career was spent as a singer and composer in the service of various noble families in France. He was appointed as a singer at the court of King Louis XII in 1498, and later served as a singer and composer for the Duke of Ferrara in Italy. During this time, he also traveled extensively throughout Europe, performing and studying music in various cities including Rome, Venice, and Vienna. Mouton's music is characterized by its intricate polyphony and use of complex harmonies. He was particularly skilled at writing choral music, and his works often feature multiple voices singing different melodies simultaneously. His compositions were highly regarded during his lifetime, and he was considered one of the leading composers of his time. One of Mouton's most famous works is his Missa Tu es Petrus, which was composed in honor of Saint Peter. The mass is notable for its use of a cantus firmus, or a pre-existing melody that is used as the basis for the composition. In this case, the cantus firmus is the Gregorian chant "Tu es Petrus," which is woven throughout the mass in various forms. Another notable work by Mouton is his motet Nesciens Mater, which is a setting of a text by the medieval poet Gautier de Coincy. The motet is written for six voices and is notable for its use of complex harmonies and intricate counterpoint. It is considered one of Mouton's most beautiful and expressive works. Mouton's music was highly influential during his lifetime and continued to be performed and studied long after his death. His works were particularly influential in the development of the Franco-Flemish school of composition, which was characterized by its use of complex polyphony and intricate harmonies. Despite his success as a composer, Mouton remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his life. He continued to compose and perform music until his death in 1522, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful and innovative music that continues to be celebrated and studied to this day.More....
