Born on September 5, 1960, in Somero, Finland, Mattila grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age. She studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and made her professional debut in 1983 at the Finnish National Opera. Mattila's career took off in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when she began performing in major opera houses around the world. She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1990, singing the role of Donna Elvira in Mozart's "Don Giovanni." She quickly became a favorite of audiences and critics alike, known for her powerful voice, dramatic intensity, and magnetic stage presence. Over the years, Mattila has performed a wide range of roles, from Mozart and Verdi to Wagner and Strauss. Some of her most notable performances include her portrayal of the title character in Puccini's "Tosca," which she has sung at the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Paris Opera, among others. She has also received critical acclaim for her performances as the Marschallin in Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier," which she has sung at the Salzburg Festival, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Royal Opera House. In addition to her work in opera, Mattila has also performed in concert halls around the world. She has collaborated with some of the world's leading conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, and Sir Simon Rattle, and has sung with major orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Mattila's talent and hard work have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1999, she was awarded the title of Kammersängerin by the Austrian government, in recognition of her contributions to the arts.
