He was the son of a music teacher, and his father recognized his musical talent at an early age. Merikanto began his musical studies at the Helsinki Music Institute, where he studied piano, composition, and music theory. Merikanto's early compositions were influenced by the Romantic style of music, and he was particularly drawn to the works of Chopin and Liszt. He began to gain recognition as a composer in the late 1890s, and his works were performed in concerts throughout Finland. In 1899, he was awarded a scholarship to study in Berlin, where he continued his studies with some of the leading composers of the time. Merikanto's music continued to evolve during his time in Berlin, and he began to incorporate elements of Finnish folk music into his compositions. This was a significant departure from the Romantic style that had dominated his earlier works, and it helped to establish him as one of the leading composers of the Finnish national school. One of Merikanto's most famous works is his opera "Juha," which was based on a novel by Juhani Aho. The opera premiered in 1922 and was an immediate success, both in Finland and abroad. It is still considered one of the most important works in the Finnish operatic repertoire. Merikanto also composed a number of choral works, including his "Cantata for the Finnish People," which was written to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Finland's independence. This work is notable for its use of Finnish folk melodies and its patriotic themes. In addition to his compositions, Merikanto was also a highly regarded pianist. He performed extensively throughout Finland and Europe, and his performances were praised for their technical virtuosity and emotional depth. Merikanto's later years were marked by personal tragedy, including the death of his wife and two of his children. Despite these hardships, he continued to compose and perform until his death on February 17, 1924. Today, Merikanto is remembered as one of the most important composers in Finnish music history. His works continue to be performed and recorded, and his legacy as a composer and pianist remains an important part of Finland's cultural heritage.More....
