Born on January 10, 1930, in Kauhajoki, Finland, Panula grew up in a musical family and began playing the violin at a young age. He later switched to the double bass and played in various orchestras before pursuing a career in conducting. Panula studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he was mentored by the legendary Finnish conductor, Dean Erik Tawaststjerna. He also studied with Franco Ferrara in Italy and Hans Swarowsky in Austria. Panula's early career as a conductor began in the 1950s, when he worked with several Finnish orchestras, including the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 1965, Panula was appointed as the principal conductor of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held until 1972. During his tenure, he led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings, including works by Sibelius, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky. He also conducted the Finnish National Opera and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra during this time.
