Role:ComposerBirth:1848Death:1915Period:RomanticGenre:KeyboardOtto Malling was a Danish composer and pianist who lived from 1848 to 1915. He was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist and his mother was a singer, and they both encouraged their son's musical talents from a young age. Malling began his musical education at the age of six, studying piano with his mother and later with the renowned Danish pianist and composer Niels Gade. He also studied composition with Gade and with the German composer Friedrich Kiel. In 1871, Malling traveled to Leipzig, Germany, to study with the famous composer and pianist Franz Liszt. He spent two years studying with Liszt, who had a profound influence on his musical style and approach to composition. After returning to Denmark, Malling began a successful career as a composer and pianist. He was appointed a professor of piano at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in 1884, and he held that position until his death in 1915. Malling's music is characterized by its Romantic style and its use of Danish folk melodies and themes. He wrote a wide variety of works, including symphonies, chamber music, piano pieces, and songs. One of Malling's most famous works is his Symphony No. 1 in C minor, which was premiered in 1883. The symphony is a powerful and dramatic work, with a strong sense of melody and a rich orchestration. It is considered one of the finest examples of Danish symphonic music from the late 19th century. Malling also wrote a number of chamber music works, including several string quartets and a piano trio. His String Quartet No. 1 in D minor is particularly notable for its use of Danish folk melodies and its intricate counterpoint. In addition to his instrumental works, Malling also wrote a number of songs, many of which were set to Danish poetry. His song cycle "Fra Fjeld og Dal" (From Mountain and Valley) is a beautiful and evocative work that captures the spirit of the Danish countryside. Malling's music was well-received during his lifetime, and he was regarded as one of Denmark's leading composers. However, his music fell out of favor in the years following his death, and it was not until the mid-20th century that his works began to be rediscovered and performed again. Today, Malling is recognized as one of Denmark's most important composers of the late Romantic period. His music is admired for its beauty, its emotional depth, and its strong connection to Danish culture and tradition.More....
