Born on May 1, 1946, in Turku, Finland, Gothóni began his musical journey at a young age. He started playing the piano at the age of five and showed exceptional talent from the beginning. His parents recognized his potential and encouraged him to pursue music seriously. Gothóni's early musical education was at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he studied piano with Liisa Pohjola and composition with Aulis Sallinen. He also studied conducting with Jorma Panula, who was a significant influence on his career. After completing his studies at the Sibelius Academy, Gothóni continued his education at the Juilliard School in New York, where he studied piano with Sascha Gorodnitzki and conducting with Jean Morel. Gothóni's career as a pianist took off in the 1970s when he won several international competitions, including the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1966 and the Munich International Competition in 1970.
