He was born on February 28, 1953, in Sääminki, Finland. Vänskä grew up in a musical family, and his father was a self-taught accordionist. He began playing the clarinet at the age of nine and later studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Vänskä began his career as a clarinetist, playing with the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. He also played with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, where he later became the principal clarinetist. In 1982, Vänskä decided to focus on conducting and became the conductor of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. Under Vänskä's leadership, the Lahti Symphony Orchestra gained international recognition and won several awards, including the Gramophone Award for Best Orchestral Recording in 1999. Vänskä's success with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra led to invitations to conduct other orchestras around the world. In 2003, Vänskä became the music director of the Minnesota Orchestra in the United States. He led the orchestra to new heights, and they were nominated for several Grammy Awards for their recordings under his leadership. In 2013, Vänskä resigned from the Minnesota Orchestra due to a labor dispute, but he returned in 2014 after the dispute was resolved.
