Born on April 22, 1966, in Kongsvinger, Norway, Gimse began playing the piano at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Gimse's early musical education was guided by his mother, who was a piano teacher. He later studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, where he received instruction from renowned pianists such as Einar Steen-Nøkleberg and Jens Harald Bratlie. Gimse also studied with the legendary Russian pianist Lazar Berman in Italy. Gimse's career as a concert pianist began in the early 1990s, and he quickly gained a reputation as a rising star in the classical music world. He has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Oslo Philharmonic, the Bergen Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. One of Gimse's most notable performances was his debut at the Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2005. He performed a program of works by Beethoven, Schumann, and Grieg to critical acclaim. The New York Times praised his "impeccable technique and musicality," and described his performance as "a revelation." Gimse has also been recognized for his recordings of classical repertoire. He has recorded several albums for the Norwegian label Simax Classics, including a critically acclaimed recording of Grieg's Piano Concerto with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also recorded works by Beethoven, Schumann, and Chopin. In addition to his performances and recordings, Gimse is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at the Norwegian Academy of Music and the Barratt Due Institute of Music in Oslo, and has given masterclasses around the world. Gimse has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1995, he won the Grieg Prize, which is awarded to outstanding Norwegian musicians. He was also awarded the Sibelius Prize in 2002, which is given to musicians who have made significant contributions to the interpretation of Sibelius's music. In 2010, Gimse was awarded the prestigious Lindeman Prize, which is considered one of the highest honors in Norwegian music. The prize is awarded to musicians who have made significant contributions to Norwegian music and culture. Gimse continues to perform and record, and is widely regarded as one of the leading pianists of his generation. His dedication to the classical repertoire and his virtuosic performances have earned him a place among the great pianists of all time.More....
