Born on May 14, 1971, in Swansea, Wales, Williams grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at a young age. He attended the University of Wales, Bangor, where he studied music and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1992. After completing his studies, Williams began his career as a church musician, serving as the organist and choirmaster at St. Mary's Church in Swansea from 1992 to 1995. He then moved to London, where he worked as the assistant organist at St. Paul's Cathedral from 1995 to 1998. During this time, he also studied conducting with David Hill and Paul Spicer. In 1998, Williams was appointed as the director of music at Bath Abbey, a position he held for 11 years. During his tenure, he oversaw the music program at the abbey, which included a choir of men and boys and a girls' choir. He also conducted the abbey's orchestra and gave numerous organ recitals. In addition to his work at Bath Abbey, Williams has also been active as a conductor and composer. He has conducted numerous orchestras and choirs, including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the London Mozart Players. He has also composed a number of works for choir and orchestra, including a setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, which was premiered at St. Paul's Cathedral in 2007. One of the highlights of Williams' career was his appointment as the conductor of the National Youth Choir of Wales in 2009. In this role, he led the choir in numerous performances, including a tour of China in 2011. He also conducted the choir in a performance of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem at St. David's Hall in Cardiff in 2013. Williams has received numerous awards and honors for his work in music. In 2003, he was awarded the Royal School of Church Music's Sir Sydney Nicholson Prize for his contribution to church music. In 2010, he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the University of Wales, Bangor, in recognition of his achievements in music. He was also appointed as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2019 New Year Honours for services to music. In addition to his work as a musician, Williams is also a respected music educator. He has taught at a number of institutions, including the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, the University of Bristol, and the University of Bath. He has also given masterclasses and workshops for choirs and conductors around the world. Today, Williams continues to be active as a conductor, composer, and organist. He is currently the director of music at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, where he oversees the music program for the chapel's choir and orchestra. He also continues to conduct and compose music for a variety of ensembles and organizations.
