He was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, to a family of musicians. His father was a choirmaster and organist, and his mother was a singer. Bairstow showed an early interest in music and began playing the organ at the age of 12. Bairstow received his early education at Huddersfield College and later studied at the Royal College of Music in London. He was a gifted student and won several prizes for his compositions. After completing his studies, Bairstow returned to Huddersfield and became the organist and choirmaster at St. Peter's Church. He held this position for 25 years and transformed the church's music program into one of the finest in the country. Bairstow's compositions were heavily influenced by his love of church music. He wrote a large number of choral works, including anthems, hymns, and canticles. His music was known for its rich harmonies and intricate counterpoint. Bairstow was also an accomplished organist and wrote several pieces for the instrument. One of Bairstow's most famous works is his anthem "Blessed City, Heavenly Salem." The piece was written in 1906 and is based on a hymn by John Mason Neale. It is a powerful and moving piece that has become a staple of the Anglican choral repertoire. Another notable work is his "Evening Service in D," which was written in 1925. The piece is a setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis and is known for its soaring melodies and lush harmonies. Bairstow's music was highly regarded during his lifetime, and he received many honors and awards for his work. He was appointed a Fellow of the Royal College of Music in 1929 and was awarded the CBE in 1932. Bairstow was also a respected teacher and taught at the University of Durham and the Royal College of Music. Bairstow's legacy continues to this day, and his music is still performed and recorded by choirs and organists around the world. His influence can be heard in the works of many contemporary composers, and his contributions to the Anglican choral tradition are immeasurable.More....
